Following on from last years criticism where six million taxpayers were taxed incorrectly, HMRC have now revealed further errors in their PAYE tax collection mechanism. 450,000 people are to face demands for a total of £180 million after errors from the 2007/2008 tax year have shown tax underpayments. HMRC has already written off any underpayments where the total amount is less than £300, but will require repayments from other taxpayers - the option to repay via ongoing salary payments will be allowed where possible. Nearly a quarter of million pensioners also underpaid tax due to tax codes being incorrectly applied for 2008-2010. HMRC will write off these amounts and not issue demands for repayment.
